STEEPLING SESSION

DON ERMA'S EGMONT WIN

(Special from "Hurry On.")

HAWERA, May 12,

Brilliant weather favoured the opening day of the Egmont Racing Clubs Winter Meeting at Hawera today, and the club experienced a most successful gathering to commemorate Coronation Day, Consequent on a lot of recent rain, the track was holding, The attendance was very large, possibly a record, and the totalisator turnover showed a substantial increase. Investments totalled £19,630 against £12,126 10s last year. BOUGHAL ALL, THE WAY. Capably handled by Rex Beale, Boughal scored from end to end in the Tongahoe Hurdles. He led through the straight first time from Clarion Call, Dancing Lady, and Hunting Queen. Dancing Lady momentarily joined him at the five furlongs but made a bad jump and fell back. At the half-mile Boughal was bowling along clear of Petrarch and Clarion Call, with Hunting Queen and Tout le Monde handy. Boughal led into the straight from Clarion Call and Hunting Queen, and he went on to win easily from Clarion Call, who just held off his stablemate Hunting Queen. Tout le Monde was a moderate fourth. Clarion Call fenced well and might have had a chance with Boughal had they had to jump the last fence. Hunting Queen finished strongly, but there was no dash in Tout le Monde's finish. ANOTHER END-TO-END.. Te Huia won the Coronation Stakes from end to end. Fafner, Vadanoe, and I Golden Rill were his closest attendants most of the way, but Te Huia -finished too well for them. Fafner, better handled than Vadanoe, just beat him for second place. Golden Rill was fourth, in front of Basra. ALMOST IN A LINE. Lady Ina won the Flying Handicap in a great finish with Taitoru and Greek Gold, the trio crossing the line together. Greek Gold was soon in front from Lady Ina and Taitoru, and this was still the order at the straight entrance. Lady Ina had Greek Gold's measure half a furlong from home, and just held off Taitoru, who finished fast. Solaria was a fair fourth after being slow away. Red Manfred tailed thefield in .the early stages but was finishing on. OPPOSITION OUTCLASSED. Flying Chief outclassed the opposition in the Telegraph Hack Handicap. He soon took charge and led into the straight from Winsome Lv, Eara, and Ngatirahiri. Winsome Lv was with him at the distance, but he drew out to win easily. Maahanui was third just in front of the fast-finishing Myriam. with Ngatirahiri close up fifth. SOME GKEAT JUMPING. The Egmont Steeplechase provided a splendid contest, all seven runners jumping in great style. Don Erma made all his own pace and held off all challengers to score decisively. Don Erma was soon in charge from Bonnie Rollox and Forest Glow, and these three were in the van for nearly two miles, with Don Erma always just in front, until Bonnie Rollox with a great leap momentarily' took charge at the sod wall the second time. Don Erma was soon in control again, and after leading into the straight from Monastic, Bonnie Rollox, Forest Glow, and Pahu, he stayed on to score by a length and a half from Monastic, with Pahu a good third. Then came Bonnie Rollox and Forest Glow. Don Erma won really well, but both Monastic and Pahu were staying on solidly. Bonnie Rollox ran well until his condition gave out. He made some great jumps, especially at the sod wall both times. Forest Glow was going well half a mile from the end. but stopped badly. ARCTIC KING FROM REAR. After tailing the field for most of the journey, Arctic King came with a great run in the straight to win the Mcßae Cup.- Tahurangi made most of the running from Windsoreen and One Whetu, and once into the straight One Whetu took charge, but he could not hold off Arctic King and Master Cyklon. Tahurangi was fourth. The winner's finish was impressive. EASY FOR SURELLA. , The favourite Surella finished fast in the straight to win the Hack Scurry in easy fashion. Colleen Gain was the leader into the straight from Race Call, Erebus, First Chapter, and Surella. Race Call was in charge.halfway up the straight, but Surella ran past him, and Erebus just headed Race Call on the post. First Chapter finished well after running wide at the turn. FRIESLAND'S GOOD EFFORT. Friesland put up a great performance in winning the Tawhiti Handicap after being left well over a chain at the post. Taitoru, Corowa, and Gold Mission made the pace from Darecourt and Bantry, but Friesland was making up ground at the straight entrance. Gold Mission was in charge at the distance, but Friesland cut her down in great style. Corowa was just in front of .Taitoru, and then came International, who was also left, and Bantry.
