STRIKING HOMAGE
AUSTRALIAN EVENTS
ENTHUSIASTIC CROWDS *
SYDNEY, May 12.
In a series of patriotic demonstrations Sydney, in common with other Commonwealth cities, paid striking homage to the King. The celebrations included a civic luncheon, military display, and an evening harbour festival.
Enthusiastic crowds attended all the functions, with the city in its happiest mood.
The many church services drew large attendances. Messages of loyalty have been sent to the King by the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie, on behalf of the Commonwealth and by the Premiers on behalf of the State Governments.
An enormous crowd, infected with the holiday spirit,- invaded the city last night to see the illuminations and decorations. The pblice estimated that the crowd was twice as big as the ordinary Friday night shopping crowd.
Over 3000 people took part, in a united service at the Town Hall.
The number of Coronation Medals distributed to Australians is about 6500. Medals have been awarded to officials and citizens who rendered valuable public service and to leaders in industry and the professions.
Over 3000 aborigines on 21 Government stations in New South Wales celebrated the Coronation today at campfire dinners, sports meetings, fireworks displays, and sing-songs. The "l-Di-'is included boomerang-throwing.
