MINISTER OF FINANCE
A WEEK IN LONDON

LONDON, April 17. Lord Balfour of BiMeigh, who not long since returned from New Zealand, called on Mr. Walter Nash on Monday morning. At noon the Minister of Finance went to Spitalfie ds Market to see New Zealand apples being auctioned and then he was (with Mr. Jordan) entertained at luncheon privately Messrs. Goodwin,- Simon, and Company, auctioneers for Do- | minion fruit. In the evening, Mr. Nash dined at the Danish Legation to meet the Prime Minister of Denmark. Early on Tuesday morning, Mr. Nash, with Mr. Jordan, went to Smithfield for the show of New Zealand bacon and pigs. In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Nash dined with Lord and Lady Bledisloe, and there they met Mr. and Mrs. Runciman. ■ •» On Wednesday, after luncheon at Chatham House as a guestof the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the Minister went to the Dominions Office to discuss further with Mr.. W. S. Morrison (Minister of Agriculture) and Mr. Malcolm Mac Donald questions relating to the proposed Trade Agreement. ~, . , On Thursday there was the official opening of the New Zealand apple season. ■ In the evening, Mr. Nash was a guest of the British Chamber of Commerce, at the Hotel Victoria; when the chief speaker of the evening wai Mr. Walter Runciman (President of the Board of-Trade). Mr. Nash also made a brief speech. Mr. Runciman emphasised the.importance of the Mother Country sustaining her foreign trade connections.. One of the most attentive listeners to Mr. Runciman's speech was the -German Ambassador (Herr yon Ribbe'ritrop).
