ARTESIAN FLOW
IMPROVED IN HUTT VALLEY
Mr. R. F. Mainland, Borough Engineer, Lower Hutt, reported, to the Lower Hutt Borough Council on Monday evening that the artesian head at the Seaview pumping station had imI proved by some 18 inches. It was [noted in January that the head had fallen 4ft 6in, but a reading taken on I the 4th instant showed that the head I was now 3ft below the level recorded 'when wells were first put down. The .improvement appeared to be general throughout the Valley. The rise would appear to be coincident with the filling up of the cut made by the Public Works Department when dredging at the mouth of the river. The dredge, which was not worked for a considerable period, is now again in use, but not in, the same locality as previously. There is little doubt, said the engineer, that the deep cut previously made has to a large extent been filled in with the shingle which travels down the bed of the river. The shingle, j however, being pervious, can never fully seal any breach, if made, in the impervious ceiling over the artesian flow.
