BISHOP'S SUPPORT
CHURCH COLLECTIONS'
WELLINGTON DIOCESE/
■ 'A decision to take lip for the King George <V Memorial.'Fund in the Anglican churches of the. Wellingl ton Diocese has been communicated to the , clergyman.,of the . district .by; trie I.t. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop o-Wellington. -: ■•_. /. "A nation-wide appeal has been made by., the Government that the Coronation celebration should.be marked by the offering of money .which'will enable . some permanent' memorial. of the , occasion to be established," wrote his Lordship. "In the Old.Country, this is going to take the form of the provision of playing fields, for children; in this Dominion the Government has decided to establish> permanent children's health camps in" each island at! a cost of £100,000. In view of this national appeal, it seems to me nothing less than the call.of duty. that..during the Coronation services we should give our people the chance of responding to it and showing that: the Church is ever in the forefront -in any attempt to provide opportunities, for .healing and recovery, to tlie.weak.and. sickly, children of our people.... ~, • ■■.-■. , "The matter was fully, discussed at a meeting,of the Wellington clergy convened for the purpose, and it.was agreed that I should have the right in suggesting to, all churches in the diocese that some opportunity should be given to those who, attend, any of the Coronation services that may be held to contribute to the King George V National Memorial Fund, which his Majesty King George VI has approved for a'national* appeal in lieu of any Coronation memorial. It was suggested . that where it is. hot, possible to give one of the collections on' Sunday, May 9, one of the other of the following methods might be'adopted:1— "."■'- "l. That the collections at any special services held in our churches on Coronation Day, May 12, should, after paying the. expenses of the services, be given to the fund: " ■ "2. That where there is to be a united service held-On Coronation Day, the vicar should ask those responsible for the service to see that a collection is made for.the fund. - • .. : "3. That where either the first two alternatives is not possible, a retiring collection should be taken at the morning and evening .services, on.Sunday, May 9, ~•' . , "Any contributions that your parish may make in response to any, appeal should be sent to the treasurer of the diocesan office as soon as possible. . . '. I very much hope that our loyalty to the Crown and our hopes and prayers for God's blessing, on our King' and i Queen, as they dedicate themselves to their great responsibility, may be given some tangible expression in contribution, however small, in every one of the parishes in my diocese towards the fund which will leave in New Zealand a permanent memorial of ■'> this great occasion."
