"JUST AN ACCIDENT"
AMBASSADOR'S OPINION
GOERING'S THANKS TO
AMERICA
General yon Boetticher, German Air Attache, who accompanied the German Ambassador, Herr Luther; to ; Lakehurst, stated that it was impossible for the crash to have been caused by> the firing of an incendiary bullet into the gasbag, one of the many sabotage rumours.
After talking with many of the survivors among the crew, Herr Luther reiterated his faith in lighter than air ships, and said it was just an accident.
General Goering; German Air Minister, has cabled to Commander Rosendahl at Lakehurst station (a survivor of the Shenandoah dirigible disaster) thanks for heroic work, which he describes as beautiful proof of the spirit which links the airmen of all nations.
(Received May 8, 10.45 a.m;)
NEW YORK, May 7,
Reports that the Zeppelin Company recently received threatening ■ letters which emphasised the possibility of sabotage has prompted a Senatorial investigation under the- chairmanship of Senator Copeland.
Congressional leaders 'expressed the almost united belief that the disaster would militate against any dirigible building by the United States. ' A naval officer who was on the scene at the time of the disaster declared that lack of training of the civilian ground crew which was substituted for the former American naval crews may be partially responsible.
At noon the wreckage of the Hindenburg was still so hot that penetration even by thosa wearing asbestos suits was difficult.
