CLUB NOTES

UNIVERSITY.

There is a possibility that this year's inter-University tournament will be held in Auckland ihstead of at Christchurch. If, as is thought at present, it will be necessary to hold'the tournament at the end of May, the University Club's team will have to work up /a combination and improve their stickwork iin very quick time if the Seddon Stick is to be retained.

The fourth grade this year is almost entirely composed of'players who are playing for their first season. They seem to show much promise and well deserved their win last Saturday. The junior team, owing to the many changes in its personnel, will possibly take a while to settle down. Although they lost last week the material is there and the players should give an improved showing in future. Walker, at left full-back, played a sound game. The senior B team is a more even one than last year, and on Saturday's showing should do well. Mason (fullback) and Dixon (right-half) are two new members of the team who showed up to advantage: on Saturday. It was anticipated that the senior A team would be lacking in combination. This was shown on Saturday against Karori, whose stickwork and understanding between players was an object »lesson. The University men were over-eager and too prone to merely get rid of the ball when they had it, rather than passing it to one of their own men. ' UPPER HUTT WARRIORS. Increased interest taken by the local boys in hockey enabled the Upper Hutt Warriors' to field two teams in the third grade last week. The , A team were successful in beating Wesley A, 8 points to 1, thus reversing a defeat of last year. A big improvement both in individual and co-opera-tive play was noticeable. The new players, A. Hazelwood, P. Sutherland, B. Burrell, and P. Kelly proved their worth in their respective positions, particularly in attacking movements. The B team were unfortunate in taking the field three men short during which time Huia, their opponents, scored some excellent goals. Two more players came on before half-time and a distinct improvement was noticed. As the B team played together for the first time when they met Huia, who are regarded as one of the strongest teams in the competition, they performed creditably. C. R. Haines, who was sole full-back, played a good game, and R. Murray at goal excelled.himself. G. Lauper and G. Hunt, both new players, played good hockey on the right wing and right inner respectively. Last, year's player L. Lawry was unfortunate in missing two goals, and S. Freeman and D. Auckram worked well together on the left wing and left inner positions. L. Barnes and S. Stewart will make good halves when they have settled down. KARORI CLUB. The Karori Hockey Club is again looking forward to the coming season with enthusiasm and will be strongly represented in. all grades in. which

teams are entered. They have this year a much larger muster of players than was the case last season, there being approximately twenty new members' and, owing to the increased membership/it has been decided to enter an extra team. The membership now stands at over '100 playing fnembers. The club will be represented in the following grades: Senior (2 teams), senior B (2 teams), Junior, third, fourth, and intermediate. It has been found necessary to enter two senior B teams, owing to the fact that some of last year's senior A players will have to play in this grade, and last year's junior players, who are all young and keen, are worthy of promotion. This should be a definite adr vancement for the club, as it will mean that the majority of the lower grade players will move up a grade. The committee was surprised and gratified to receive such a large number of new boys who are eligible for the intermediate grade. It is from this grade that the future senior players will come, and it is indeed pleasing to see the number of boys who are taking up the game. The selectors are faced with a difficult problem in selecting the first two teams, as all last year's senior A players are again available, and I. Nimmo, who was out most of last season with a broken leg, M. Browne, who was unable -to play owing to an appendix operation, and J. Watchman, who was out half-way through the season with a leg injury, will again be playing. In addition to these players, the club has received two representative players from outside districts in S. McDonald, Canterbury full-back, who played for the club in the lower grades some years ago, and R. Wade, from Poverty Bay, where he played centre-forward. FETONE CLUB.. . t Although the senior B team drew with Hutt-last Saturday, the-low scoring was scarcely an indication of the efforts put into the game. The pace was kept fast throughout and a little more finish to the work of the Petone men would have led to better results In the circle. The full-backs showed lack of combination at times, getting in eaei* pthers way instead of supporting one another, and the halves threw away opportunities by hitting too hard. Individually the forwards, played well but they did not rely on one another tufnciently. They tried short passing at times, but more, training will be required before the line becomes a formidable attack.
