TABLE TENNIS
INTER-CLUB MATCHES
(By "Half Volley.")
A problem at present confronting the executive of the N.Z.T.T.A. is. the limited time' allotted for the New Zealand championships. Last year the two days and nigHts provided were found inadequate and on the second day play continued until the early hours of the morning.
This year it is hoped that three days will be allowed, but before a decision can be reached the Auckland Table Tennis Association will probably be approached as it is usually well represented and the change may interfere with the arrangements of the northern players. HUTT VALLEY MATCHES. With the first round of the Hutt Valley Association's inter-club matches completed, the results, with the possible exception of the St. Ronan's v. Empire match, were hot surprising. Woburn recorded an impressive victory over Empire No. 2, winning by 17 to 3. For the winners Blackie, G. Corbett, and Taylor (the last-named a promoted player) won their four singles but Fuller, an ex-Wairarapa representative, lost to R. E. Mitchell and JtfisS.B. Strang. Of the Empire team Miss Slrang and Mitchell revealed promise but P. Dudley found the opposition too 'strong whilst F. E. Smith was over-eager. Having their first experience of interclub matches in the Hutt Valley the Petone team made an impressive showing by drawing with Taita. The Petone players won the singles by 9 to 7 but Taita proved too solid in team work, Batu and Arms being particularlyprominent Miss K. Tustin was in fine form for Taita winning three of her four singles while Croiidis .did the same for Petone. G. Tustin won two singles and lost the final to Bornholdt, 34-36. E. Batu also took two singles for Taita whilst J. King, G. Mcßride, and Bornholdt each secured two for Petorie. NEW CLUB'S WIN. Playing against AUcetowh Trinity Hutt Cricke* another new club, recorded a comfortable win by 13 to 7. For the winners L. Roberts was in fine fettle, his powex-ful driving being too consistent for the opposition. L. Pyne, a greatly-improved left-hander, also found the conditions to his liking and, as in the case of Roberts, he was untroubled by the opposition and won all his games. Empire's defeat of St. Ronans, last season's champions, by 12 to 8 was a fair' indication of the difference between the teams on the night. K. B. Longmore and E. Hughes had their colours "lowered early iti the contest but were not showing their true form. As St. Ronans No. 3 and 4 players are not very strong the team will probably again meet defeat in the course of the first round. Of the Empire team A. T. Wood displayed practically every attacking shot known to the game to win two of his singles. Wall, a hardhitting player, and Halligan also took two singles, the latter showing a remarkable defence. Harding, winner of his four singles, was consistent without being brilliant.
