BASKETBALL

SENIOR GAMES

CLOSE CONTESTS

GOOD FORM SHOWN

(By "Ring")

Wellington East Old Girls defeated Kia Ora by 19 goals to 13 on SatuiYi jday, after a game fast and interesting in patches, with East on the attack throughout. Kia Ora centre failed toj play up to their usual standard, with the result that the defence third was overworked, and with the East forward Ino combining well in fast passing movements, the defenders bore the brunt of the attack. Good defence work, supported by alert centres, gave the East forwards continuous opportunities, and their accurate shooting finalised matters. Over-keejiness by both teams caused many infringements. v*. Stone played a reliable game in East centre, and M. Howe intercepted brilliantly in Kia Ora centre. Awatea had a close game against the newly-promoted Dental Clinic team, but the game throughout was marred by too much personal contact and overdefence, particularly in Awatea defence third. V. King was brilliant in Awatea forward thicd, all three forwards combining well. They were too active for the Clinic defence. Dental Clinic's centre was not playing as well as they did the previous Saturday, and an ankle injury to one of the forwards slowed up play, in this third. The game ended with Awatea leading by 10 goals to 14. In {he hope that a senior game on No* t5 court at Mount Cook would gain ..publicity for. basketball, the management committee arranged for a senior A match to be played there on Saturdays, and the first ox these was that between Wesley and Training College. One drawback was that players from1 other cburts offended In walking across the court while the game was in progress, and it is hoped that this'will not occur again. Training College won the match alter a very close game, with Training College's more accurate, shooting the deciding factor.- J. Grainger was again outstanding in College's forward third, and did much to make her team the victors. The game was very fast, and both teams lost opportunities to gain possession of the ball .thrown, hasty batting of the ball instead of catching it. Training College^, scored 16 goals to' Wesley's 13. University won comfortably against Technical Old Girls by 24 goals to 14. University were definitely superior in the forward lii the Technical forwards wasting time and opportunities by too many passes in working the ball to the goal, with the result that Jniversity had numsn-u.. chances at intercepting. E. Hawkey was the outstan'*" * player in the centre third. M Clarke, and L. Clarke were elected members. The secretary of the Wellington Basketball Association wrote advising that Miss J. Mitchell had been reappointed the representative to the Referees' Association and enclose-5 the annual grant of £5. The attention of referees was drawn to the fact that the bylaws regarding chewing gum, wearing jewellery, and incorrect, costumes were not being complied with in some teams. , The president reported that Miss McGuire was unable to carry on the ] duties of secretary owing to ill health. and it was decided to give Miss MeGuire leave of absence until the end | of the season. The meeting recorded j Its appreciation of the interest and y work done by Miss McGuire and ex- , pressed the hope that she would soon be able to assist again Mr. C. Dyer . was atmointeri to act as secretary. Advice was received from the New Zealand Referees' Association that the closing date for applications for the theoretical examination was June 15. On Mr. Budden's suggestion, it was decided to ask the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association to arrange a Referees v. Executive match to be played as an effort to.raise funds for the reoresentative teams' exoensps. Discussion on rules -included the following:—That a. player must notify , the referee when she desires to change j thirds, during the game. That referees c give closer attention when deciding when a tie-ball occurs, as in many in- , stances prompt following-up of the j Same shows that one player has de- , finitely gained possession first. A , player who crosses any third line . should "be penalised, whether she has possession of the ball or not. A player 1 who catches the ball while facing the ( onno'Ho goal may swing around on c one foot. NEW ZEALAND TEAM. After consulting the affiliated associations, the executive of the New Zealand Association advises that the projected tour by a New Zealand team has been abandoned for this season j This was .considered advisable to en- I able the New Zealand Council to dis- t nu<s<: the nronosal from the All-Aus- c tralia Association that if possible, the i: New Zealand team visit Australia next a year, and that some nttemnt be made ' to obtain uniform rules, either for the jj Empire or for international purposes.. It was regretted that the change of j olans would disarmoint those players B already chosen, but it was felt that the 1 itnnortanoe of the nroposal to the 1 whole of the Dominion, made it im- 1 nerative that every association should be eriven the opportunity to discuss the | matter at the next council meeting. i

Senior A and B grade trials will commence on Saturday next, and players are asked to be prepared for practice after the matches arc completed.
