YORK BY-ELECTION

SEAT STILL CONSERVATIVE

(Received May 7, 3 p.m.) LONDON, May 6. The by-election in the York electorate owing to Mr. L. R. Lumley's appointment to the Governorship 'of Bombay, resulted, as follows:— The Hon. Charles Wood (National Conservative), 22,045. Mr. John Dugdale (Labour), 17,895. The Hon. Charles Wood is the eldest son of Lord Halifax, and Mr. Dugdale is secretary to the Leader of the Opposition. Mr. C. R. Attlee.

At the 1935 General Election Mr. Lumley secured 25,442. votes and his Labour opponent, Mr. R. Fraser, 19,168 votes.
