WOMAN'S ACTION
ATTEMPT TO INJURE BABY
(By t'pleirraph—l'resa Association.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
"I cannot pass over a case of this kind without imposing punishment." said Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday, when a married woman, Amy Louisa Graham, appeared for sentence after having pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to injure a neighbour's baby by placing caustic soda in the baby's milk.
Counsel for the accused pleaded for probation, on the ground that the •accused never intended the child to be injured, and also referred to the state of her mind at the time.
His Honour: I cannot accept for one instant that a person in the habit of using caustic would not appreciate the dreadful thing it would be for a child to get the poison in its mouth. The child might have died or been injured for life.
The accused was ordered to be detained for fifteen months for reformative purposes.
