INCREASE OVER 10 P.C.

BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

WEIGHT OF UNCONTROLLABLE EXPENDITURE

The City Council, after a long discussion last night, adopted the recommendation of the estimates committee without amendment, providing for an increase in the rates collectable by £56,750, that is, from £530,092 last year to £586,842, or approximately lOf per cent. This is probably the highest percentage increase from year to year in the history of the Wellington City Council. All speakers were agreed that the allocations made lo ihe spending committees were the minimum amounts essential lo the maintenance of city services, and emphasis was laid upon the increase in the weight of uncontrollable expenditure, due mainly to the greater demand from the Hospital Board, the larger bill for materials, increased outgoings due to the shorter working week, and higher interest charges. No .development works of any magnitude have been provided for, and statements were made by, both the chairmen of the works and the reserves committees that in spile of the heavier calls upon ratepayers, there is a probability that a number of men will have to be paid off during the year.
