CHANGEABLE AND COLD

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate westerly to south-west-erly winds, rising: at times to gale force, backing ..by morning again to southerlies. Weather fine at first, but still changeable, and at times showery. Temperatures becoming cold. The general forecast for the Dominion, issued at noon today, is for winds between west and south-west, tending to southerlies, moderate to strong generally, and of gale force at times in exposed positions. The weather will be still squally and changeable, with heavy showers at times in most places, snow oh the ranges, and hail in-places. Temperatures will be cold. During the weekend, a series of intense westerly depressions continued to cross the Dominion, the. last of the series passing eastwards-, on Sunday, but a second has since developed, and this morning the latter was advancing on to the southern districts. Although there have been bright intervals, especially in eastern areas, the weather generally has been changeable with strong and squally winds between north-west and south-west. -■ prevailing, and at times reaching gale force in many places. Most parts of the country have already had showers, and in districts with a westerly aspect heavy downpours have been experienced. At Auckland the weather has been for the most part cloudy and unsettled with occasional showers, but heavy I rain fell there during Saturday night. IA moderate south-westerly wind prevailed on Saturday, and a westerly on Sunday. It was showery. there this morning with a strong west-south-west wind. In Wellington, a strong squally northwesterly wind blew during the weekend, a'gust of 60 miles an hour being recorded at 8.15 a.m. on Sunday. The weather was mostly overcast on Saturday, ith some misty showers during the night and on Sunday morning.. Intermittent sunshine was experienced on Sunday ; afternoon, but.the wind continued to be strong and gusty. Early this morning, a southerly change was experienced, accompanied by some showers. The rainfall on Saturday was 3 points, and the sunshine 2.9 hours. The rainfall on Sunday was 2 points, and the sunshine 4.4 hours. Christchurch- had a bright sunny day on Saturday with a cool southwesterly breeze. Some showers fell about 3 a.m. on Sunday, but most of the day was fine with a fresh northwesterly wind. A strong southerly sprang up in the night, and from 10 p.m. to midnight, heavy rain fell. The rainfall totalled 11. points. This morning was again fine with a gentle northwesterly breeze. At Dunedin, after some early morning rain on Saturday, the weather cleared, and the rest of the day was fine, though a cool southerly breeze was blowing. Some heavy rain fell on Saturday night. Sunday was] changeable/occasional showers falling in the morning, but the afternoon was fine. At 9 a.m. today, the sky was clear but a moderate gale was blowing from the south-west. ■"
