Sir,—All our "useful industries" have been encouraged- into existence and maintained in that existence by the taxation .of all members of the community to continue to keep our "useful industries" in existence. Wool growing is,:a primary industry, but woollen manufacturing is a "useful industry" and could .not live unless the whole community were. taxed to keep it alive. The selling prices of all these "useful industry", products are artificial compared with the real value ov the intrinsic > value; of: the goods themselves, .• .and■. the arti, ficial value:is maintained out of taxation by the prices of our primary products. Manufacturers' have/adopted the latest -methods of scientific production and management,; : yet:. without general taxation in,their special favour' their "useful industriesI'could not live.
