Approximately 5700' trees and • 1000 bulbs were; planted, byf the Wellington Beautifying Society Ifest season, according to the report/to be presented to the annual meeiting' this' evening. The effort was not so good as, that of the society's first season, but. was all that the finances would permit. The major plamtings were.those done on the Hutt Road and Point Halswell Road. . Smaller plantings were also carried out on .the main Brooklyn Road and on Mt. Victoria overlooking Oriental Bay, and a commencement was maiSe with the planting of Ngahaurangci Gorge with a small supply of pohutukawas ' The society, at the end of the, planting season, showed a credit balance' of £1 5s lOd only, us all the funds col-' lected had been used for the purpose, intended. Several, means were tried to augment the funds, but the response was disappointing. Reviewing the position the executive considers that funds will have to be obtained from direct donations arid membership fees. The active membership is 288—Life members, 48; financial, 163; unfinancial at date, 56; junior^ 21. . .. ■ ■ "The time has arrived for. a new drive to be made^" states the report, "and surely in a-.city of the size of Wellington, 20,00b persons could be obtained who would be willing to. contribute 10s per, annum towards reclothing our hills, and drives in native flora and so make Wellington, world famed for its beautiful surroundings?[f a big effort be made this season some pleasing result should be apparent by 1940, the date of!'the Centenary.
