PONEKE V. WELLINGTON
" Poneke and Wellington met at Wake- * field Park and found that points were % not easily earned.- The first spell. -• especially ■in the early part, was on '■•' the ragged side, caused chiefly by the *. inability of the backs to handle ; cleanly or give passes properly. Later - the forwards moved better together, -' with the Poneke men doing really f, well. ' In the second half there was - a different class of play altogether, and » some excellent football was provided. " The Poneke pack again, was the deli ciding factor, and the backs became * more certain, with the result that the -'. Wellington defences were pierced often « enough to make Poneke supporters ,' jubilant. The Poneke inside backs * were well fed with the ball. One * movement was brilliant. It was started i by O'Brien and carried on by Griffiths. * Le Quesne, Reese, O'Brien again, and ' Black, who veered infield and scored I between the posts. The defence was / thoroughly outwitted, as it was also J when Hoskin broke through and ran ■4 straight for about 25 yards before pass- * ing to Ongley, who raced away from * the opposition and scored. Welling- '• ton led at half-time by 6 points (a pen- * alty goal kicked by Lang and a try by A Paterson) to 5 (a try by Stone converted by Vartan). In the second ** half tries for Poneke were scored by Black, Ongley, and Griffiths, one being converted by Griffiths. For Wellington Paterson scored a try, converted by Lang. The result was Poneke IG, Wellington 11. Mr. J. Hepburn was the referee. .
