TUNNEL ROAD

PROPOSAL SUPPORTED

CHRISTCHURCH, April 29,

Support for the proposed tunnel road between Christchurch and Lyttelton was given by 23 of the 28 local bodies, hoards, and associations represented at a conference today. The conference wps the climax of efforts by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce since the suggestion of the .Prime Minister thdjt,' if the chamber obtained a demonstration of unanimity on the proposal the Government was prepared to carry it through. Mr. J. Wood, En-gineqr-in-Chief to the Public Works Department, presided. Mr. Wood stated that the impression \that the Government was prepared1; to pay the whole of the cost of the tunnel road was mistaken, being based ".on a misunderstanding of remarks by the Prime Minister.

Mr. Wood's statement provoked questions about the actual extent of the support which the Government would give the project. These Mr. Wood said he could not answer. However, he quoted the Acting Prime Minister (the. Hon. P. Fraser) as having suggested that the Government might find half the cost. However, it was a matter for 'Cabinet.
