PLIMMERTON PLAYERS

SUCCESSFUL FIRST EVENING

' The 1937 season of the Plimmerton Play-reading Circle opened on Tuesday evening in • St. Andrew's Hal), which was nearly filled, and the large audience certainly derived good amusement and entertainment from the readings. '

Two one-act comedies were presented. In the first, "The Dumb Wife of Cheapside," a dumb wife regains the use of her tongue by an operation, and she uses it to such purpose that her ' despairing husband finally drinks a potion inducing deafness in order to gain a little rest from the incessant verbal barrage.

Those . taking ; part in this ■ reading were. Misses J. Firth and R. Edginton and Messrs. J. Lagdon, L. Grieve, Ross, Griffiths, Dallasfcon, and G; Gibson. The performance was produced by Mrs. N. Ken. .■■'(:■■

The other play which was read, "Mr. Sampson," dealt with the vacillating affections of a middle-aged bachelor between two maiden sisters and of the complications arising therefrom. The

parts were very ably sustained by Mrs. Gibson, Miss • E.; Cummins, and Mr. J. Bolton. This' reading was also produced by Mrs. N. Kerr.

/During the evening several musical items were presented. . Mesdames Hill and Tunnicliffe played a pianoforte duet, Miss Tunnicliffe gave a violin solo,;,and Mr. Greig sang. The audience showed great appreciation of each item.

After the entertainment supper was served by the committee^ It was stated that • the was gratified that the younger members of the community are showing an appreciation of, and lively interest in, the activities and ideals of the circle. The membership is growing and it is expected that some fine performances will be witnessed as the season progresses.
