PAREMATA FLATS
SUGGESTED PARK
PURCHASE OF IAND
The desirability of the land containing the old redoubt at Paremata being made available as a recreation ground was expressed at a meeting of property owners of Plimmerton and Karehana Bay held in Wellington last night, but the opinion was generally expressed that the area should be acquired by the Government.
Mr. J. Wallace, of Plimmerton, who presided, said ,ho thought that the tentative offer of the Government of a £ for £ subsidy, up to half the purchase price was a good one, but the obligation that would fall on the Hutt County Council and eventually on the ratepayers made it necessary for the matter to be thoroughly investigated. He thought no time should be lost in coming to a decision regarding the purchase of the land from the Walker Estate on the terms secured by Councillor R. L. Button, of the Hutt Council, in whose riding the land is situated. He suggested that the area should be taken, over by the Government as a national recreation ground. It could be developed along the lines of the Government's policy to provide adequate recreational facilities for the people who were, now enjoying a shorter working week. If this were done the ratepayers in the riding would not be required to pay rales on an area which would be used mostly by Wellington people.
Others present supported this suggestion. . The meeting, which was called primarily to stimulate interest in Plimmerton and the surrounding district, was adjourned until next week, .when concrete proposals will be prepared to submit to a meeting of ratepayers in Plimmerton. Arrangements are also to be made for the formation of a Plimmerton Progressive Association.
