COTTAGE DESTROYED
OIL STOVE EXPLOSION
The explosion of an oil stove in v four-roomed cottage in the Ngahauranga Gorge, about 250 yards above the meat works, shortly before 11 o'clock last night, resulted in the sole occupant of the hut, Mr. F. Knox, an elderly man, suffering severe shock and burns "to the face and hands. A fire wa3 started by the explosion, and despite the strenuous efforts of the Wellington Fire Brigade to save the building by running leads from the Ngahauranga Stream, the fire had such a hold that the cottage was destroyed. Mr. Knox was taken to Wellington Hospital by the Free Ambulance. The crowd that gathered to watch the fire for some time disorganised traffic in the gorge.
Mr. Knox's condition this morning was stated to be satisfactory.
The house on the north side of th» cottage, owned by Mrs. Gladys Murray suffered damage by scorching. The cottage was owned by Mr. Footer, of Poplar Grove.
