There were a number of people in Wellington who were able to produce quite a good excuse for being a little late for work this morning—the sort of excuse that leaves one in the comforting position of being able to dismiss with a confident smile1 the employer's facetious greeting of "Good afternoon.l" Just after 8 o'clock the overhead cable .of the .outward track in Pirie Street broke and curled up across the road, and the procession of workers' trams coming through the Hataitai tunnel at that busy hour came to a standstill, as power for the outward track was cut off also for a while. At one stage there were six heavily-laden trams lined up, and practically all the occupants decided to walk as far as Courtenay Place rather than risk undue delay while repairs were effected. The breakdown trucks, however, were on the spot quickly, and little time was lost in adjusting the fault. i
