MARYBOROUGH TROTS

WAIKATO PRINCE IN. CUP

Small fields, wet weather, and only a fair attendance faced the Marlborough Trotting Club for its Annual Meeting yesterday. The totalisator handled £2995 10s against £2315 last year, an increase.of £680 10s. SOMETHING IN HAND. Loyal Avis appeared to win the Trial Handicap with a little in hand from Princess Rey, who finished weir halt a length away after drifting several lengths*behind the leaders in ■ Ihe middle stages. Loyal Avis was in front throughout. She was joined by Relax after half a mile, and Relax was a close third. The other two, Sister Bingen and Lucky Guy, were hopeless. Loyal Avis, a four-year-old black mare by Grattan Loyal—Necessity, comes of a useful family. She is owned and trained in the district by W. Pope. "DAYLIGHT" SECOND. . The "Gloaming" proposition, Guy Forest, from J. Bryce's stable, broke up in the first quarter of the Stewards' Handicap, and Native Leaf cleared out, winning by half a "dozen lengths from Guy Forest, with Wahrunga, who also broke, a length back. Native Leaf, an aged brown mare by Native King—Relief, is owned by Mr. W. R. M. Pearce, and trained at Hutt by J. V. Dyke, who drove him^ TROTTER BEATS FACEKS. Trevor de Oro, a short-priced favourite for the Marlborough Cup, had to strike his colours to .the straight-out trotter Waikato Prince, who gave a fine display and ca^me, away when challenged by the favourite in the run home. J. Bryce, jun., was content to trail Orleigh, Mills for a mile and a half. When First Aid made; a forward move at that stage, Bryce took Waikato Prince to the lead. • Trevor de Oro' moved up to second place on the home turn, but Waikato Prince then drew away to win well,by nearly two lengths. Trevor de Oro had to be driven out to keep First Aid at bay by half a length. Epilogue was a fair fought, .Orleigh Mills tiring badly. Waikato Prince, an aged bay gelding by Florizel from a mare by Finwater, was bred by his owner, E. R. Smith, who first trained and raced him successfully. He is now trained by J. Bryce, who received the handsome silver, cup, presented by Mr. V. C. Constant, on behalf of the owner. J. Bryce, jun., was presented with a whip. RACE WON AND LOST. Relax looked assured of victory when she was 'four or five lengths clear of anything else 100 yards from the post in the Seaview Handicap, but in- another 50 yards she went to a bad tangle and was beaten out of a place. Novikoff made the early running from Cassidy. Novikoff dropped back crossing the top, and Relax joined Cassidy in the lead, with Queen de Oro handy. Relax shot away at. the distance, and Queen de Oro drew up to Cassidy and Novikoff. When Relax went to pieces Queen de Oro came along to beat Cassidy by a length. Novikoff was half a length away. Queen de Oro, a seven-year-old bay mare by Rey de Oro—Queen Pointer, was driven by her owner-trainer, B. P. Broughan, Spring Creek. Novikoff, a two-year-old by Ayrmont Chimes— Pavlova, was having his first race. He is trained by J. Bryce, and is related to Red Shadow. NATIVE LEAF AGAIN. Native Leaf, penalised to 84 yards, ran past the other two with nine furlongs to go and won the President's Handicap well by a length. Cuy Forest, who broke and lost several lengths leaving the straight the second time, beat Wahrunga, who finished on a break, by half a length. The winner gave another smooth exhibition, but had only a pair of duffers to deal with. DESPERATE DUEL. Princess Rey and Cassidy had a desperate duel in the Seddon Handicap, victory going to the former by a neck. These two and Novikoff had the race to themselves, « and Novikoff, after making the pace for nearly six furlongs, retired and. was ,two lengths away third. Queen de Oro and Loyal Avis lost their chances through breaking at the start. Princess Rey, a four-year-old colt by Jack Potts from Dilemma, is owned by

Mr. A. Johnson and trained at Hutt Park by L. O. Thomas, EXPERIENCE TELLS. Rising eighteen-year-old Tennessee Child finished gallantly under a stifr drive to take the Dash Handicap off Orleigh Mills by a head, with the backmarker Trevor de Oro a short head away third. Janice made most of the running, and was six lengths clear in the middle stages. She- compounded at the home turn, and Orleigh Mills and Tennessee Child drew away. Trevor de Oro made a late run, just failing, but the veteran had enough left to wear down Orleigh Mills. Epilogue broke up early and was last most of the way. First Aid did not finish as1 well ac in her other races at the meeting. Tennesee Child, a Southland-bred gelding by Harold Rothschild from a mare by Tennessee, is now trained at Kiore, near Stratford, by E. G. M. Hasler, who drove him. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
