SERVICE IN THE ISLANDS

The opinion that the New Zealand Government should provide opportunity and encouragement for young men in the Civil Service to stay in the Dominion dependencies in the Pacific, instead of recalling them after a short period, was expressed by Mr. E. McKegg, of Earotonga, managing director of the Cook Islands Trading Company, who arrived at Auckland by the Matua on Monday (states the "New Zealand Herald"). Mr. McKegg said that many young men, from various Government Departments, were sent to the Cook Islands, Niue, and Samoa, and served for short periods;. perhaps about three years. When they had acquired a good knowledge of native affairs, of trade, and of other island questions, the Government recalled them and their specialised knowledge was lost. Many men who had gone to the islands liked the conditions and the work there, and would stay if they had the opportunity and the means. Mr. McKegg added.
