ANOTHER GISBORNE WIN

An improvement on her latest form landed Pennycomequick narrow winner of the Martinborough Handicap from Master Cyklon. Always handy to the front, she came through to take charge when Boomerang collapsed in the straight, but she had to be hard ridden over the last half-furlong to stave off a determined claim from Master Cyklon. _ It was- another win for the stock of Hunting Song on a track that suits the breed, and it was probably because of the nature of the track that the filly was made second favourite. Pennycomequick is a three-year-old daughter of the Autumn — Sabine mare Autumina, a three-quarter sister to Aiguille, and she is now being raced on lease by her trainer, J. W. Nixon, of Gisborne, who formerly had Aiguille. . She has been a good winner in her two seasons to date, mainly on the East Coast, but she was also successful in heavy ground at Ellerslie last New Year's Day. Master Cyklon was probably rather unlucky not to secure first honours. After following Boomerang for half the trip, he . drifted out of it on the home turn, which was troubling so many horses during the day, but once on the straight he finished resolutely, in similar style to Alunga in, the previous race, and he just failed to pull back the Gisborne visitor. Darecourt had every chance, but lacked the necessary reserve to. go with Pennycomequick in the straight. Boomerang stopped quickly after setting a merry pace, but the race will improve him. Bun Fight ran just fairly, but Lordly Knight was never in the. serious scene, Sansfoy, a hot favourite, pulled hard early and shut up like a book just before the field came to the straight..
