ELDERLY MAN'S DEATH
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST
An inquest, was opened yesterday afternoon by the Coroner (Mr. E Gilbertson)1 into the death of Alexander Cameron, 72 years of age, and, after part of the evidence had been' taken, was adjourned until this afternoon to enable further evidence to be called. Mr. Cameron, who lived for the greater part of his life in K.aiwarra, was knocked down and fatally injured by a motor-cycle when he was crossing the Hutt Road at Kaiwarra about 8 p.m. on March 12. The motor-cycle was ridden by a youth, Raymond J. Pearce, who had with him as a pillion passenger another youth, John J. L. Gibson.
Pearce and Gibson stated in evidence that they did not see the deceased until he was a few feet off. They were travelling at a slow pace, which they estimated as being between 15 and 18 miles an hour, and said they were well on their correct side of the bitumen, which statement Constable J. H. Alty substantiated.
John Duncan Cameron, a brother of the deceased, said his brother was very fond of walking and walked along the Hutt Road every day. He was careful when crossing the road and was very active in spite of his advanced age.
■■ Sub-Inspector Dempsey said that two men, Messrs. H. E. Young, of Dannevirke, and P. J. Hogg, a commercial traveller, were coming into Wellington in a car when the accident happened, but neither was in Wellington at the moment. Both, or one of these men, said he noticed Mr. Cameron a few seconds before the accident, and that he narrowly missed being struck by a motor-car. '
The evidence was adjourned until today with a view to Mr. Hogg's evidence being available.
