RIVERTON'S ANNUAL

BIG CUP AND STEEPLES

The galloping fixture of main interest, in the South Island on Saturday will be the opening day of the Riverton Racing Club's Annual Meeting, where the particularly good stakes have attracted fields of the best quality horses in the south. In recent years the Northi Island has usually had representation at this meeting, but no northerners have undertaken the trip this year. Up till two years ago the Riverton Club held to the old system of betting, but ,in view of the popularity of the win-and-place system in Southland the committee decided last year to change to the double-pool mode, and this will again operate this year. ' The quality of the fields is almost as high as could be secured at present in the South Island, and in numerical strength the card is superior to last year's. The events of main note on the opening day are the Riverton Cup and the Great Western Steeplechase, and the latter race is particularly interesting, as serving to set the winter cross-country performers on their way. , The- following horses promise to be well fancied for their races:— ■ Trial Handicap.—Bow Street, Vallock, and Invadere. Waiau Steeples,—Royston, Nbcturnus, and- Black Banner.' Aparima Handicap.—Bay Duke, Lochlaggan, and Dollar Bill. Longford , Hack Handicap.—lsland Linnet, Stolen March, and Ardchoille, Riverton; Cup.—Ashaway, Rebel Lad, and Amelita. Great Western Steeples.—Trisox, Royal Limond, and Possum.
