HOROWHENUA UNION
The annual meeting of. the Horowhenua' Rugby Union was held at ;Levin' on Tuesday evening, there being a full attendance of delegates. The financial statement showed that a profit had been made on the yearns working. It was decided to play the first games this season on Saturday, April 10: ■ ■ ■ : ' ; 7 .
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patrons, Mr, C. L. Hunter, M.P., and Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P.; president, Mr. J. Gillespie; vicepresidents, Messrs. A. Richards, .C. R. J. Inder, N. Winiata; secretary, Mr. J. Casey; treasurer, Mr. J. W;"Rimmer; ' auditor,-■ Mr. W/ Bull; management committee, Messrs. A. - Gillespie. D. Richards, A. J. Devonshire, J. B. Bateman, A. Monahan, S; Hooper A. ■Holder; vice-president to the. New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr., J. Gillespie; delegate to the New Zealand .Rugby Union, Mr. J. Gmespie; senior selector, Mr. G. Nicholls: junior selectors, south, Mr. D. Richards, north, Mr. D. Cole.
A well-worn elephant's tooth, about 3in across and ljin deep, was the source of considerable interest when it was exhibited by the curator, Colonel E. R. Sawer, at the Auckland Zoological Society's field day at .the. Atickland Zoo Colonel Sawer explained ■ that Jamuna, the female, elephant at the zoo, had pulled out the tooth' from her mouth that morning. . In v an\ayerage life of 60 or 70 years, elephants .had three sets of teeth. Each set contained ionly four large teeth; and the ' elephants removed old ones by tugging at them with their trunks.
