EASTER ACTIVITIES
MANY LEAVING CITY
RUGBY GAMES BEGIN
Hoi cross ,buns and Easter eggs have held pride of place in many shops, today, and will probably appear in almost every home tomorrow, but the i minds of many residents of Wellington will turn more to Easter excursions out of the city or sporting events of many kinds during the weekend. The usual Easier services will be held in many churches tomorrow morning and on Sunday, and after that the open spaces will call if the weather is good, and sporting bodies have made ample provision for the entertainment of everyone. Hundreds of people propose to leave Wellington, bookings by. rail, road, sea, and air being heavy. Many golfers, bowlers, footballers, and others will travel to try conclusions with players elsewhere. Those who stay at home will have a wide choice of sporting fixtures, an d every theatre in the city and suburbs is preparing to entertain more patrons J than usual during the holiday period. FOOTBALL JUBILEE. • Easter this year has fallen close to the dividing line between summer .and winter sports, and in Wellington it j will be marked by the first of the Rugby football games of the year. The Athletic Football Club is celebrating its diamond jubilee and has arranged a programme of sporting and picnic events for the weekend. On Friday night members of the club and their friends will assemble at the new gymnasium, Arlington Street, for ■an informal gathering, and on Saturday morning the gymnasium will be offi-. cially opened. In the afternoon the annual match between Athletic and ] Hui Mai will be played at Athletic Park and that evening a jubilee dinner will be held. A motor drive and picnic has been arranged for Easter Sunday, and on Monday the celebra-1 tions will be concluded with a parade, addresses, a sports programme, a jubilee match against Wellington, and a jubilee, dance in the evening. There will also be other football matches and several teams will travel out of town to open the season against other clubs.
Saturday promises to be a busy day for many sports. The M.C.C. v. New Zealand cricket match will be concluded, , the interprovincial rowing eights will be decided in the harbour, Wellington will play Hastings for'the Gannet Cricket Cup, the Easter championship tournament of the Wellington Lawn Tennis League will begin, the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association will conduct its Easter tournament at Miramar, the New Zealand junior tennis championships which were postponed at Timaru because of the infantile paralysis epidemic will also take place at Miramar, arid the provincial golfing tournament will be played at Miramar.
The Wellington Bowling Centre's Easter rinks tournment commences tomorrow and will be continued on Saturday and Monday, and many Wellington bowlers are leaving the city today to take part in tournaments in other centres. Many golfers are also going further afield for games, and hundreds will attend outlying links for the weekend tournaments that have been arranged.
The Wairarapa races will provide sport for those who follow racing, and numerous other sporting events will be,held near the city.. If the weather is fine the beaches will probably be crowded, and those who wish to go further than the shore will have an opportunity to visit Picton on Monday, arrangements having been made for a one-day excursion to the sounds.
