GENERAL STRIKE
POLICE PRECAUTIONS IN NEW YORK
NEW YORK, March 23,
The threat of the Committee for Industrial Organisation of a general shutdown is approaching reality. Extra police are on duty in case disorder is reported.
The sit-down strikes again were debated in the House of Representatives at Washington.
Mr. C. E. Hoffman (Republican) asserted that the motor strikes would be ended quickly if President Roosevelt instructed the Governor of Michigan, Mr. F. Murphy, and the Secretary of Labour, Miss Frances Perkins, to tell the sit-down strikers to leave the plants. - ,
A message from Detroit says that the Mayor has consented to a demonstration by strikers who have agreed to hold it an hour later than was at first intended, thus avoiding .the busiest traffic period. His action is subject to ratification by the council.
The Providence store strikes have ended. The merchants granted a wage increase and recognition of the Committee for Industrial Organisation as the bargaining agency for members only. '
