A BIG FIELD

A big field will contest the Wellington . Provincial Championship title at Miramar on Easter Saturday, and the following Monday and Tuesday. Miramar is the venue this year by arrangement with the Wellington Golf Club, the- event usually taking place at Heretaunga. The holder, J. P. Hornabrook (Manawatu), Dominion amateur champion, will not contest his title, and, with the exception of a few outside entries, among whom is E. S. Toogood (Middlemore), the former Wellington Club player,'the bulk of the competitors' come from round Wellington. The fact that there is a tourney at Hokowhitu is probably responsible for Hornabrook's absence, and the number of tourneys elsewhere probably accounts for the lack of outside entries in what formerly was almost a North Island contest. Amongst local entrants who are likely to be well up are.H. A. Black, back in form since his new occupation takes him more out of doors, his brother, J. L. Black, always a great match player, J. Shelly, whose game improved a great deal last year, B. M. Silk, who has not played much lately, but always likely to turn it on, and S. M. Watson, W. G. Home, F. Kember, D. Dacre, and W. J., Davidge, all of whom have the golf on their day. Miramar is in fine condition for the event. E. W. Thurgood and I. A. Ewen have both the advantage of play on English courses. The full number of players who could be admitted (80) has been reached; amongst these are 20 entries of 4 handicap and under, including several scratch, 1, and 2 handicap men.

The qualifying rounds of the championship will be played on Saturday, and the first and second rounds of the stroke competition over 36 holes. The semi-finals of the championships will -be played on Tuesday morning . and the finals in the afternoon.
