ARREARS OF RATES

LOCAL BODIES COMPLAIN

GISBORNE, This Day

. Non-payment of Native rates was one of the chief questions taken up with the Acting Native Minister (the Hon. F. Langstone) during his visit to the East Coast district. It was stated by a deputation yesterday that in the Waiapu County alone the arrears of Maori rates in six years amounted to £30,000, which inflicted a serious hardship on the council. It was contended that if Native lands were to be treated differently from European the responsibility should be a national one instead of a burden being placed on the few county councils concerned. A similar, complaint was made by the Waiapu Hospital Board, it being stated that maintenance expenditure had nearly doubled in ten years, almost solely on account of the increased number of Maoris receiving treatment. The Minister, replying, said he would place the position regarding the hospital before the Minister of Health. As far as the county problems were concerned, he suggested that the position might be alleviated by more liberal road grants to the counties affected, and by taking steps to see that rates on productive Nativp lands were paid,
