The strongest class this seasi Nicholson Yacht Club's race for tl ley being back again in the fleet ago, while Ernie Hargreaves in come visitor. 'Unfortunately Ernie was under the impression that .the Wylo prize was being run, and with sheets hardened in, was climbing to weather of the fleet, which, with sheets eased slightly was. making across to Fraser's Rock. Before the mistake was realised, the Southern Maid had lost a fair amount of ground and her chance of a place. Jean impressed considerably by her performance as far as Eraser's ■Rock, but lost time there by poor spinnaker work. Second to the Impudence at Coromandel, she rounded Fraser's Rock in a heap with the Kitty and Lavina. On her performances lately, she appears to be the fastest Rona in Wellington, downhill, and should have rounded the Coromandel the second time ahead of the other Ronas. However, a wet spinnaker in a perverse mood is a tough proposition on a reach, and the crew struggled with it almost half-way across before getting it set. As it was, the Jean collected second place on handicap, and with her crew becoming more accustomed to local conditions, she will shortly be pushing the Lavina and Kitty along. The June was sailed in this race by her new owner, Les. Thorns, with Dudley Tonks as for'ard hand. Dudley is a younger brother of Basil and Bernie and with his skipper has infused some new enthusiasm into Sunday sailing. , ' The Impudence added another fastest time to her. record, but was unable to beat the handicaps. She might have managed second place, but for the fact that she had to dispute possession of the finishing line with a large cargo boat pulling out from the Queens Wharf, and found the slipstream from her propellers too tough to negotiate. Bosun Moore had an easy win in the Idle Along race, and next year the opposition will have to be stiffened up considerably to give him a race for the championship pennant.
