AS THE DAY BEGAN

As the day began, so it concluded, with an outsider in Lord Moutoa romping home at the expense of the favoured division in the Eketahuna Handicap. Lord Moutoa gave the fifth favourites their sixth success during the day, and in one of the events a fifth favourite could not hav^ won, as there were only four starters in that race. Lord Moutoa was in the picture all the way, after moving up alongside Darecourt at the end of the first furlong and following Lavina and Pennycomequick round the home turn. Once on the home stretch Lord Moutoa raced to the front, and a late dab by Darecourt failed by three-parts of a length to reach him. This six-year-old son of Acre has enjoyed four successes this season, the last three in open class, so he has be.en paying his way in his occasional appearances. He recently reappeared at Woodville after being off the scene for a couple of months, and, though he did not then show up, the race worked the necessary improvement in him for his winning effort yesterday. Darecourt was perhaps a little unlucky.. After being first out, he was passed by Lavina and Pennycomequick, and he seemed to be squeezed for room, as he lost a couple of lengths. He moved out to pass Pennycomequick entering the straight, and just near the finish he came very fast down on the leader, but the post was too close. Lavina set most of the pace and just missed a dividend by a neck. Hunting Lodge came strongly from the rear to be right up fourth, and Lady Ina also finished well from just in front of her at the straight entrance. Waste Land went a useful race, but Pennycomequick was one of the first beaten. Bodyline was another.to fall out by the way.
