Unusual careers that have received; recognition include that of Mrs. B. F. Leslie, who is" clerical officer at the British Embassy in China, and Mrs. E. S. MacKenzie, archivist at the British Legation at Havana, both of whom get the M.B.E. For "special duty" at the India Office Miss E. B. Sainsbury is made an M.B.E. These notable tributes to women's achievements are completed by an award for gallantry to a purdah lady, Ashraf-un-Disa Begum. When fire broke out in a cinema at Hyderabad 42 women and children in the burdali balcony were forgotten. In "smoke, darkness, and leaping flames," she stripped herself of her sari, lied1 it fo the balcony, and saved the lives-of five other women. She has been awarded the Medal of (.he Civil Division oC the Order of the British Empire.
