RABBIT BOARDS
CONCERN AT PROPOSAL
(Special to the "Evoninij Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Among the minor local bodies concerned about the Government's amalgamation proposals are rabbit boards and, like drainage boards, they are objecting strongly, at least in the Manawatu district. Typical of the views held by rabbit boards on the subject were those expressed at a meeting of the Eastern Pohangina Board on Wednesday. It was pointed out that if there was to be any amalgamation it would be better for rabbit boards to combine rather than be absorbed by county councils. Still even if that idea were adopted, it was felt that expenditure would not be reduced nor efficiency increased. As with other local bodies the cry is "hands off." Another problem facing rabbit boards is the hours of work of the rabbit inspectors under the Industrial and Conciliation Act. It is held that the clause fixing hours of work from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. is unreasonable as it is after 5.30 p.m. and before 7.30 a.m. that rabbiters have the best results. If boards are tied down to the hours in the Act there will be a loss of efficiency and the rabbit pest will increst-e. Both matters are to be brought before* the North Island Rabbit Boards' conference.
