MAYOR'S WARM TRIBUTE

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"There is no need for me to traverse the progress of your order or to testify to the excellent work it is doing. The facts and figures speak for themselves.- I should like, however, to express the thought that the services returned to the people by friendly societies of the calibre of the Manchester Unity are inseparably part of and vital to the maintenance of the best interests of our social life," said the Mayor (Mr. E. Davis) when welcoming representatives of seventy lodges to the annual conference of the Auckland District Manchester Unity this morning.

Brothen G. W. Eade, District Grand Master, presided and the New Zealand branch was represented by Bros. W. McMillan, D.G.M., F. A. Smith, P.D.G.M., and J. E. Allen, P.D.G.M.

The balance-sheet showed Accumulated'funds in the district of £167,433.

Mentioning the Government's proposed national health insurance scheme, the Grand Master said that friendly societies had been given to understand that they would have a share in administering the scheme.
