BOWLING

CHAMPION PAIRS ( , Play in,the champion pairs of the Wellington Bowling Centre commenced on the Hataitai green today. The heavy rain made the excellent green a little holding in the earlier part of the day, but the green was playing well,, and improved in the afternoon. Competitors thoroughly enjoyed their games in the unwonted freedom from ■wind. The following were the results:— . FIRST ROUND. Thprndon (G. Springhall and L. M. Naylor), 18; Hutt (A. Moore and J. Roper), 17. Upper Hutt (W. D. Bennett and T. W. Lightfoot), 22; Woburn (H. Parsons and A. H. Overend), 14. Porlrua (W. Seadden and T. Ryan), 18; Seatoun (P. Hepburn and R. A. Robinson), 16. Petone (W. Kerr and O. Silbery), 27; Victoria (J. A. Martin and S. Luke), 21. Eastbourne (S. Johns and C. A. Rendle) won by default from Kewtown. Island Bay (D. Munro and J B Lawrie), 26; Karori (W. Dempster and: F. Platt), 8. On the eighth head Silbery scored 8 against Luke, every bowl counting. In a close game Thorndon was 2 up on Hutt in the last head when Hutt ■was lying second shot an inch from the jack. Naylor, through a beautiful shot played on his own bowl, shouldered out the Hutt bowl, and left Karori 3 up. Which won them the game. Lawrie had a complete walk-over in the Island Bay-Karori game, his accurate bowling practically extinguishing his opponent. The second round started at 2 p.m. The semi-finals will be reached tomorrow morning.
