The embankment has been extended south of the main stand to the birdcage and, for • some distance northwards of the stand. A view of the whole course is now available to probably 3000 or 4000 additional patrons, and an unobstructed view of the birdcage is now possible from the lawn. Some 4000 yards of material were acquired for the jod, which has now been completed and sown down. A good strike of grass has already been obtained, and the whole lawn and embankment will be in wonderful order for the Winter ]VT£Gtin£f After 'being off the winning list for just on 12 months, Royal Jewel showed a welcome return to form when he annexed the Mount Albert Handicap on the opening day of the Auckland Meeting. He left the mark smartly and was in a handy position .behind the leading division for the major portion of the journey, to take command as the field straightened up and go on to a comfortable victory. The effortless manner in which he disposed of the opposition over the final stages augured well for his prospects on'the second day, but on this occasion he struck interference in the early stages,; and his chances were ruined. Royal Jewel is a very useful pacer in the middle classes, and while the tracks remain good he will always have to be considered. Although he is as yet only a two-year-old, nothing shows more promise in Auckland than Axminster (says the "Star"). This colt had his first start at the Auckland February Meeting. He began well and was with Horsepower in the lead with a little over three furlongs to go, the pair staging one of the best tussles witnessed at Epsom for some time, victory going to Horsepower by a neck. The defeat of Axminster was no disgrace, and the manner in which he handled himself throughout the contest left a fine impression. A fine big colt, the son of Eingtrue and Great Eyre as yet shows "greenness, and the experience is sure to work a great improvement in him. Axminster. who is a half-brother to those useful trotters Great Admiral and Golden Eagle, should turn out one of the best pacers produced in Auckland for some time.
