AMATEUR CYCLING

RECORDS BROKEN

A. G. PATRICK BRILLIANT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, March 7.

The largest gathering ever to witness a cycle meeting at Western Springs Stadium attended the New Zealand amateur cycling championships yester- j day afternoon and evening Auckland j riders were particularly successful on the banked concrete oval of 517 yards to the lap. The outstanding performer was A. G. Patrick (Auckland), who won the 10-miles paced title in a sensational manner by over one lap and in the Dominion record time of 20mm 33sec. This is a reduction of 56sec oil the previous record held by H. RDwight. The sprint title for 100 metres was contested in a final of three match races between R. T. Taylor and J. H. ; Wade. Taylor gained the decision with two heats. The thousand metres time trial ended remarkably with a triple dead heat between the 1936 title-holder, G. R. Giles, J. C. Murray. Canterbury, and J. H. Wade, Auckland. All broke M. P. Byrne's Dominion record by l-ssec to clock lmin 16 2-ssec. In the junior events J. L. Thomson (Canterbury) was far superior to the other contestants and won with apparent ease. In the Italian pursuit championship Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland entered teams. During the afternoon Canterbury defeated Wellington, but did not contest a match with Auckland. Auckand, owing to a brilliant effort by Patrick over the final lap, won the title and returned a time 2sec faster than that of Canterbury. The 1937 champions are as follows:— 1000 Metres Time Trial.—J. C. Murray and G. R. Giles (Canterbury) and J. 11, Wade, Auckland. 100 Metres Sprint.—R. T. Taylor (Auckland). 10 Miles Paced.—A. G.
