MURAKOSO'S GREAT EFFORT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 7.

Before a large attendance at the Caledonian ground yesterday afternoon K. Murakoso, the visiting Japanese athlete, attempted to break the two-mile record of 9min 20 l-ssec, established in 1927 by R. A. Rose. Murakoso's time was Omin 21 4-ssec, and, though he failed, he ran a brilliant race and received an ovation.

The Otago man, W. A. C. Pullar, who was also off scratch, kept pace with the Japanese runner until there were three and a half laps to go. Murakoso then opened up a gap and won by about 100 yards. A. R. Geddes snatched second place from Pullar by inches,
