GRIFFITHS MEMORIAL
RUGBY COMPETITION
RECORD OF POINTS
Much consideration was given to the most appropriate manner of commemorating the services rendered to Rugby football by the late Mr. A. J. Griffiths, says the annual report of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union. On the suggestion of the Junior Advisory Board, it was decided to inaugurate a special competition for all .'junior grades, points being awarded to teams under four headings: (1) Loyalty to captain and conduct on the field; (2) punctuality on the field; (3) adherence to rules and spirit- of the game; (4) appearance as regards dress. Ten points were awarded under each heading over a period :of ten Saturdays, and the referee in each game was one entrusted with the allocation of markings. It was felt that as the late -Mr. Griffiths always took a particularly keen interest in the. lower, grades, some form of competition for those grades would be the most fitting memorial to him, and the competition was received by clubs in/a most enthusiastic and encouraging manner. Reports indicate that the competition has had a most beneficial effect in every respect and will, in the coming season, be an even greater success than it was in the past one. The union has purchased a suitable cup ' which will be awarded to the winning team each season. The winning team in the season just passed was the Hutt B (Army, junior first division team, which scored 389 points out of a possible 400—indeed, a notable performance. SPLENDID RECORD. The Wellington Club's third grade first division team was second with 386 points, and this team also has a splendid record. Victoria University College third grade first division, 377 points; Johnsonville seventh, 376; Victoria University College junior first division, 375; Upper Hutt fourth grade second division; 373; Miramar sixth, 373; Athletic junior grade, first division, 372; Institute junior grade second division, 372; Technical College Old Boys junior grade second division, 372; Hutt seventh, 370; Hutt B fourth grade second division, 370; and Wellington College Old Boys third grade first division, 370, also-had most creditable .records. The committee places on 'record its appreciation of the assistance given by members of the Referees' Association in connection with this competition, and, in particular, desires to make special mention of the work carried out by Mr. D. W. Chant, secretary of the association, who keeps the records of the markings in each of the games.
