OLD BOYS V. INSTITUTE
A gusty northerly 'interfered with the pleasure of players and spectators when Wellington College Old Boys and Institute continued their match on No. 1 wicket on the Basin Reserve on Saturday. On the first day at Kelburn, Old Boys scored 173 and Institute 125. When.lnstitute took strike for the second time, R. McLean and Law opened to the bowling of Boyes and Bush and a very bad beginning was made, Law, Lane, and Scott being back in the pavilion with the board showing only 27 runs.
Crook aided McLean in raising the total to 66 before1 Bush clean-bowled him. Allan McLean also found Bush too good and it was left to Bilby to come to the rescue. R. McLean had been manfully holding up an end, and he and the captain lifted the score by steady "if slow batting. The sixth) wicket took the total over the 100' mark, when Bilby was. splendidly caught at second slip by Griffiths. At tea time the score board showed 126 for six, but afterwards McLean was very busy, and in ten minutes he had increased his score by 23 runs. The devastating Bush also was too good for him, but McLean had given great service with his thoroughly sound knock of 66, in which six 4's figured. Burke, who had helped to add 55 for the seventh wicket, was caught in the slips at 168 after a sound 25. Some steady batting by Bartlett and Buchan, two youngsters up from the second team, added 21 for the last wicket, and the respectable total of 189 was reached. With an hour and forty-three minutes in which to score 142 runs to get an outright win, Old Boys made as bad a start as on the first Saturday, and three wickets were down for 23 runs. The catch by R. McLean at midon which disposed of Wareham was a particularly good one. When J. Lamason joined Rainbird, the Old Boys were put on the winning road, 90 runs being added in about fortyfive minutes. Both batsmen passed the half-century, but, they each had a little fortune. Lamason hit five 4 s and one 6, and Rainbird hit five 4's Rainbird was dismissed with only eight minutes to go, and Bush was run out straightaway. Browne and Griffiths made the runs eventually, though it was only in Crook's last over that the winning hit was made to give Old Boys an outright win by four wickets. Bush's performance in taking six for 62, for Old Boys, was a very good one, and none of the batsmen looked happy with him. Details: — OLD BOYS. First innings 173 Second Innings. C. Wareham, c R.
