SECOND WIN ON COURSE

The Lapel colours had a turn on fortune's wheel in the Greatford Hack Handicap, which was won readily by War Lap. It was also an illustration of the adage of horses for courses, for War Lap won his first race on the track last March, and his only win In the meantime had been at Marton on New Year's Day. War Lap was suited by Corroboree's going out and setting a stiff early pace. He was the only horse whom Corroboree did not soon have scratching, and he had the pacemaker settled before they turned into the home stretch.

Recently at Woodville War Lap had also made a good showing over a distance, but he was finally beaten home by Spender, who had the drop on him. He is a five-year-old bay. gelding by Lapidary from the Gold Crest mare Woletta, whose pedigree is further unascertainable, and he is now owned by Mr. F. H. Richards, of Feilding. As he has been racing only a little over twelve months in all, it is possible that he will turn out yet fairly serviceable,1 for he should stick a middle distance in better class than Saturday's. Corroboree just cannot break it, though he seems to be improving and is liable to atone some day for disappointments. G. R. Tattersall is at least able to make him go from the start. Corowa, the favourite, was not suited by the tearaway early pace and he was also in a lot of bother at parts. Missal went fairly for fourth, but Terry never raised any hope.
