JUNIOR PLAYERS
DAVIS CUP SQUADS
The imp.ortance of encouraging junior tennis is now being realised by the United States, which is planning ahead to ■ develop players in "junior Davis Cup squads," who will be "creditable representatives of the game at home and abroad." This attitude is reflected in the following American ex-
tract:—-
"The U.S.L.T.A. has recently adopted a junior development programme which should be of permanent value to ,-the 'game. . A squad of promising juniors will be formed in each of a dozen large centres in charge of a committee of senior players competent to develop the best in the youngsters in tennis, tactics, sportsmanship, etc. Players approximately of. the ages of 15 ;to 20 will be eligible. Character, deportment, and other qualities which go to make up a representative player will have as much consideration by the committees as skill. Several, days a week, during the -summer vacation, good practice will be provided against expert amateurs or professionals, and possibly in July or August the best two or three boys in each squad may be asked to assemble at a representative club .to play an Inter-squid, team match along Davis Cup lines. The U.S.L.T.A. will help to finance this programme,in cooperation with sectional associations. From the several, .squads, it. is; hoped that a large group of intelligent boys will be .developed in different parts, of ■ theUnited:States who will be properly trained by competent advisors both on and off the court, so that, by the time they become ranking players, .champions, or candidates for the Davis Cup team,, they will be creditable representatives of the game at home and abroad. , \ "The Eastern L.T.A. is among the first .of the sectional associations to draw up a programme. A Junior Davis Cup Committee has been appointed, and during spring vacation, boys will be invited to attend a first meeting.. After schools have closed, several promising boys from each member club will be'observed in play with an eye to inviting at least one of them to join the squad."
The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association has decided that no challenge will be made this year for the Wilding Shield.
