TOURS OF NEW ZEALAND
The small army ..of cricket enthusiasts who went down to Melbourne from Sydney for the Test cricket included Mr. Sydney Smith, president of the New
South Wales Association. , Since the 1926 team's tour in England, of which he was manager, Mr. Smith has not taken an ' active part in Australian icricket, as distinct from State matters. He then dropped out of the Board of Control, of which he was honorary secretary, in succession, of Mr. W- P. McElhone, the board's founder. Mr. Smith, according to. the Sydney "Referee," holds strongly that the Australian connection with New-Zea-' land should never have been broken. Tours by New South Wales and Australian teams to the Dominion, had much to do with the development of future Test players.' These should be renewed as soon as possible. If Australian teams are not to be sent, then New South Wales combinations should make the tour. • . There is no better grounding for the Australian cricketer than . a tour through New Zealand. And' no more agreeable one. It is only fair to say that, for many years the Sydney "Referee" has been a strong advocate of such tours. (
