BRILLIANT FINISH

MASTER BRIERLY IN MEMORIAL CUP

DEBHAM RETAINS FORM

(By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird.")

HAMILTON, February 27.

At. Te Rapa earlier in. the week Pango had not run a good race, but he won the Ruakaka Hurdles on the opening day of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's Annual Meeting today, asserting himself in ■ a fighting finish with his erstwhile stablemate Tudor. The latter drew up to the winner at the distance, but his weight began to tell and he had to be content with second money. The improving English Night ran a good race for third, just in front of Erination, who should be all the better for his outing. Lady Ruler and Modern Maid did best of .the others. Keith Lv shaped well for a novice. Taro, on the rails, led throughout to win the Waitoa Hack Handicap in a close finish. The. victor, who had scored a surprise victory earlier in the week at Woodville, was well supported on this occasion, and his speed and gameness suggested a very bright future on the Turf. Over the final stages he was ■ hotly challenged by Jack Tar, Very Glad, and Young Paddon, and they finished in that order behind Taro, none of the others having any chance. Flying Chief was very badly left, stumb!ing at the start and nearly falling. He subsequently ran off the course at,the turn. •

Another all-the-way ; win was recorded in the Juvenile Handicap, Huntingrnore prevailing in another warm finish. He jumped out best. Airam's Reluctance to face the barrier ended in her getting hopelessly left. The field closed on Huntingmore at the turn, but he hung on very well to just defeat Royal Vaals and Bachelor King. Aiwai and Forest Acre were right up. Royal Vaals had 'received' another rough passage, so her second was a good effort. Bachelor King ran a great race under his big weight, and at .the post was travelling better than the pair in front of him. Forest Acre ran a surprisingly good race. MASTER BRIERLY'S SUCCESS. The Herries Memorial Cup was productive of a remarkably fine finish and Master Brierly prevailed in the manner of a brilliant stayer, his final burst from a long way back being thrilling. Last air the-way to the half-mile in a strung-out field of 24 that had begun to bunch commencing the run: across the top. Master Brierly was still in the ruck making the home turn and he was not in the picture until he started, his run on the outside .from the furlong post.. Itwas a treat to see the manner in which he passed horse after horse at'the distance post. Lagoon and Tybalt held the advantage and they looked like fighting out the decision. Then Sinking Fund came through on the inside and Master Brierly put in an appearance. The leaders appeared to be merely • cantering so effectively was the veteran putting in long strides, and he caught them to win going away by a neck. •Sinking Fund, Lagoon, and Tybalt were in a bunch and were placed in that order. There was a small'gap back to Royal Dance, Werohia, Gay Broney; King Key, and Respectful, with the others well strung out and Jonathan one of the last home. Master Brierly clearly demonstrated his superiority at.the distance.. .Sinking Fund ran the best race of his career. -: Lagoon and Tybalt also went well. Royal Dance, who was the pacemaker and finished well up, impressed as a potential handicap performer: Werohia and King Rey were closest at the finish. The latter was a good favourite in a total tjool of £9851. Gay Broney. was with Master Brierly in the ruck and he, too, finished on. Respectful -also went a good race. Taitoru was up second for most of the way and he failed to stay. Flood Tide, Scotland, Spiral, and Mazir were never prominent, but Shy was handily placed on the rails about seventh early and his chances were not enhanced when the field ran round him. Tiger Gain obtained a fine position early, but failed to hold it and Kelly, prominent three furlongs from home', could not make any impression. FLEETWIND PAYS HIS BACKERS. Fleetwind scored an overdue win in the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap and paid a solid double-figure dividend. Making the home turn ■ Besiege, ■ Glen Abb, Valspear, and Palustre • were almost in line, with Fleetwind just in behind on the rails. At the distance Besiege was still clear. of Fleetwind and Glen Abb. Fleetwind got through on the inside to score convincingly over Besiege, Glen Abb, and Fox Moth. The last-named was one' of the last to leave the barrier and so his effort was particularly good. Fleetwind scored too well to make excuses for the others, especially as Besiege and Glen Abb had every chance. Both ithese hacks should be all the better for the" race. DEBHAM'S WIN IN MILE. < Without a penalty for his Te Rapa success Debham made short work of the opposition in the Hot Springs Handicap, scoring most convincingly. Nun Nicer got a flying start but he did not run on while in the first furlong. The rearguard comprised Tin Lap, Kilonsa, and Sweet Rose. As they made for the home straight King Neptune had taken charge, but Debham, who was always handy' once the field, settled down, was right up. Turning for home, King Neptune, Kilonsa, and Supreme Court (wide out) were on terms, and below the distance Kilonsa held command.. However, when asked for an effort Debham soon passed the leaders and was never seriously challenged. Royal Secret finished strongly to cut Kilonsa out of second money. Pukeko, a long way back at the half-mile, finished fast and was right up. Of the others Sweet Rose did best. Armacourt was never prominent. INTERNATIONAL AT LAST. International at last made good when he won the Champion Hack Handicap. As usual he had a good deal of ground to make up in the last half-mile. He had only Sunny Downs behind him at that stage, but crossing the top he went up fast and was actually in front shortly after straightening up at the distance. He and Killadar were fighting it out, with Lady Siegfried challenging two lengths .away. Killadar weakened near the post and International scored well over Lady Siegfried, whoso dash suggested stamina. Gay Streak, who was in the middle of the field most of the way, also finished strongly to. get fourth. Black Musk ran up fast at the five furlongs and actually headed the leader, Gadger, and then did ,not go on with it. Huskie was prominent to the turn and then weakened. LATE RUN ALONG RAIL. Patiently ridden by A. E. Ellis, Impasto finished brilliantly along the rails to win the Waihou Handicap. Entering the straight the topweight was well back, the leaders at this point being Tray .Bit and Diatomous from Galilee, Johnny Walls, Deficit, Mata Hari, Karl, and Golden Sheila, but when an opening came he shot up through it and beat Karl by half a head to the post. Karl looked the winner when he hit the front inside the distance. Whirling finished solidly for third, and Tray Bit ran a good race for fourth, in front of a. bunch comprising Golden Sheila. Prince Acre, Galilee, Diatomous, and Johnny Walls RECORD ATTENDANCE. The weather was fine and there was a record crowd. The totalisator handled £53,570. an increase of £20,050 on the corresponding day last year. RESULTS IN DETAIL. Ruakaka Hurdles, £250; %bmi£ If
