BALLANCE MEMORIAL
TRIBUTE TO PIONEERS

PALMERSTON N.. This Day. The Ballance-'district near Pahiatua was en fete yesterday for the unveiling of a memorial stone to the memory of the early pioneers and the late Hon. John Ballance, under whose land settlement scheme the district was opened up over half a century ago. The stone takes the form of a granite column on which are inscribed the names of the earliest settlers. It stands in the school grounds as a permanent memorial to those who carved homes out of thick bush and laid the foundation of a fertile and prosperous disThere was a large attendance of settlers, including a few of. those who took a hand in the pioneering work. The unveiling of the memorial fell to the honour of .Sir. Alfred Ransom, Minister of Lands in the last Government. The stone also bears the inscription: "A tribute to the Hon. John Ballance, 1880 and to the early settlers of Ballance, 1886—1896."
