SON OF THE SOIL
MAY ATONE FOR FAILURES
(Special from "Early Bird.")
' . . AUCKLAND, February 26. Son of the Soil, who paid a thumping dividend for. a place..at Te, Rapa in the spring, failed badly last weekend. His early promise has not so far .been fulfilled, but. perhaps he. will do better at > three ■'-. years. He is owned: by the Wellington .sportsman,Mr. C. E. Robertson, who secured a third placing last week and a nice place dividend with his filly Girl Pat. ; VELOCIPEDE IN TROUBLE. Having his first race since he won the Ayondale Cup four months earlier, Velocipede looked very well when produced at Te Rapa. , Unfortunately the interference that occurred in the big race on the first day, affected the Australian gelding . seriously, for his ' leg trouble came againsr. him as a result of being knocked about and he was very lame when he came in. It looks like being a long .time before he races again. ■ . ■ It took the. judicial committee a long time to arrive at the cause of this mishap. It was remarkable that no serious damage was done, apart from the trouble to Velocipede and Shy's losing his rider, for the many horses running "behind the leaders might all have been brought down. A stumbling horse near the front threw Velocipede sideways into DarK Shadow, both these horses jazzing forward and checking all those behind, but Shy ran right into Dark Shadow before the danger could be avoided. Surprisingly good races were run in the big handicaps last weekend by Vera Acre, for on the, first day,she was up with the leading division, into the home stretch'and was not far away
