FAMOUS BRIDGE TO BE RECONSTRUCTED

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, February 24,

Telford's famous suspension bridge across the Menai Strait, opened in 1826, is to be reconstructed at a cost of £228,000 to fit it for modern traffic requirements between Anglesea and the mainland of North Wales.

The Menai Bridge, which was built by Thomas Telford, the famous engineer, is one of two that connect Anglesea, an insular northern county of Wales about 280 square miles in area, with the adjoining mainland. The shallow Menai .Strait divides the two, and Telford's suspension bridge is the largest in the kingdom, and was built at the zenith of the stage-coacli traffic. The bridge was erected in 1819-26 and the feat was celebrated by Southey, the poet.
