A BETTER PETONE

WIDENED MAIN STREET

COMPLETION NOW IN SIGHT

The widening of Jackson Street, the main street of Petone, is nearing completion now, and in this, connection a contract has been let for the setting back of Butland's Building, which is between Nelson and Richmond Streets. The .contractor is Mr- ?• Daily, of Lower Hutt, and he has been advised that he can start work on March 1.

Negotiations are nearing finality for the setting back of Armstrong's Building, which is next door to Butland's. When these " two buildings are set back the widening of the street will be completed, except for Hepworth's Building/which is on the eastern side of the Post Office, but in this case only the front of the building will have to be altered. «In the case of Butland's Building, the front will be taken off and modernised and the back extended. Butland's-Building was taken by the council under the Public Works Act. In all, the council had to use the Act only three times in the negotiations with property owners and in one case the Proclamation was revoked; as the owner of the building wished to take his property back.
